One of my good friends (thanks, Jonathan) pointed me to the world wide web to seek for answers to my task and for that I am grateful.  On the net, I came across many sites that are useful and does give me some insights as to how my grooms speech should be like.

Some of these ideas and tips have been so dear to me in my preparation that I feel compel to share them with you.

Well, if you are in the midst of your own preparation of your groom speech, I hope these tips would come in handy for you.

1. Make It Yours

The groom speech is an opportunity to talk declare your love to your future wife in the public and what this happy moment means to you. That in mind…this is YOUR speech and you have to write it in your own way and in your own style.  It cannot be someone else’s speech.  Although there are help around whether in the form of advice or guidebooks, the final piece must sound like it is from your heart.  I feel that for some, that could be the most difficult part of the speech to get right.  But you must.

2. Think Of Your Audience

The purpose of a groom speech (or any speech for that matter) is to convey your thoughts and feelings to your audience.  In this case, one of the key listeners will be your bride and your own family.  Try then to design your the speech in a way that honors them and show how much you love and care for them.  This will drive your inspiration to write a memorable groom speech.

3. Know Where You Are Going

Start your preparation of your grooms speech by having an outline in order to map out where the speech is going and how it is going to end. This will help organise your thoughts as well.  You can try writing it out in a note form for easy reference.  By doing so, you can keep on the topic and also be able to deliver the speech in a smooth way.  There is no need to memorize the groom speech; that just add pressure on yourself.  Just make notes  to help jolt your memory and make the speech unique to yourself.

4. KISS

Keep It Short & Sweet. 3-5 minutes is ideal. Even if you are a good speaker and do feel comfortable speaking in front of an audience, do not be tempted to go beyond 5 minutes in your grooms speech. There are others also that are waiting for their turn.  Respect the timing.  You should be able to condense all you want to say in that period of 5 minutes.  Practise often to see how it goes as far as timing is concerned.  The audience will appreciate a short, concise and memorable grooms speech.

5. Thank Yous

A large part of the grooms speech is taken by the thank you list and this must not be negelected. You must thank everyone that have help plan the wedding.  A great groom wedding speech must acknowledge all those that have assisted in making the wedding ceremony a reality.

6. Check Notes

This has to prepared beforehand. Confer with those that will be giving their speeches too on that day; be it the father of your brise, the best man or the bride herself to make sure that there are no repetition in the wedding speeches.  This is to prevent any awkward moments.  Your groom speech must convey your own special words that will give a unique feeling to it.

7. Use Jokes Carefully

May not be for everyone as it really depends on you as a person.  If you want to include jokes into your groom speech, keep them simple and easy. Keep them natural too.

By keeping these points in mind, it would be more than sufficient to have a great and memorable groom speeches. Also, it will also give you the confidence of going forward in the preparation as you know what you want to convey to the audience.  Prepare early.

Yes there are many available but question is are they any good? Enter “Free Grooms Speeches” into the search engines and you will be flooded with articles that show you how to write your grooms speech.  But not that many actual grooms speech examples. Actually I wasted a few hours finding just a few decent looking groom speeches.

Now that I have found some, they are of low quality when I examine them further.  The thing that I really found unhelpful is that the format is so rigid and not personal at all. To personalize them, I would have to make many changes…almost like a rewrite. Again, very time consuming.

One other downside of using free grooms speeches is that you may not be the first one using that particular speech (again unless you make major changes to the speech). Lots of grooms may have beaten you to it.  Imagine if while you are making your groom speech, the wedding guests starts whispering to each other that your wedding speech sounds familar and they have heard that speech before in another wedding.

In conclusion, those are the reasons why I do not use the free groom speeches examples on the net.  I find that the time I have to spend to search the net, select the ‘right’ groom speech to use and make enough changes to the speech to make it personal is way too much.  Even after that, there is no guarantee that the wedding guests have not heard that speech before in someone else wedding.

What works better for me is a template type of format which I will elaborate in my future posts.

Here I am….I am not a very expressive person (some call me conservative).  For a long long time, I had much difficulty expressing what I feel to my fiance. But now, in front of my wedding guests, friends and relatives (about 80 are expected to turn up!!) I am expected to express my love and devotion to my bride.  Initially, even thinking about it gave me the shivers.

I am not saying that all of you is like me.  But I can also safely say that there are those who feel the same way when they start to think about this preparation of the grooms speech.  Maybe you are one of them?

I had some useful advice that help me to get over my initial nerves about the whole matter….BRAINSTORM!

It allows me to at least put things on paper the things that I may want to talk about; also things that may be more comfortable to me.

First thing to brainstorm the speech ideas revolve around how you met your wife. Was there anything unusual about the meeting?  What was the setting like? A business meeting? A dance? Were you introduce by any mutual friends?  How did this relationship develop?  You may want to even share some things from your 1st date.

Related to the first, what was your first impression of your bride?  Is it any different now that you have been able to get to know her better over the courting period?

Another way of brainstorming groom speech ideas is to reflect on all the positive characteristics that attracted you to the bride. List down 10-20 of these charaterictics. Then pick the top 2-3 that you can mention and elaborate in your grooms speech.  One tip is to make sure that you pick the qualities that are different.  Also, do not focus only on the outward beauty.  Of course there is a place for it in your grooms speech.  Just make sure that is not the ONLY good quality that you see in your bride.

The easiest way that I find to express these characteristics is to use stories ….real examples that show up these qualities.  These real life experiences will surely make you speech more alive and more interesting. It enables your listeners to have a glimpse of “behind the scenes”.

Doing this brainstorm early in my preparation of the groom speeches enables me to feel less nervous about the whole thing.

There is no fix format as far as the wedding speeches are concerned.  There can be other people that can be assigned to give their speeches…for example your bride, the bride’s father, your best man and so on.

It must be decided early if youe bride-to-be will be delivering the bride speech as well.  Deciding whether one of both will be making a wedding speech is of your own choice.  Either way, it is best to discuss the matter and better still is to sit down together and list down all the topics that both of you want to share with the wedding guests.

My wife-to-be wanted to personally give thanks to some of her own close friends…so in my case, we also have a bride speech.

Once the list of topics is finalised and if both of you decided that each will be giving a wedding speech, then you have 2 ways to go about ’splitting’ the topics.

One is for each of you to take different topics.  This will ensure that there will be no repetition of the same topics.  Also, since the topics are ‘equally’ divided, the length of the wedding speech should also be similar or close.

The other alternative is for both of you cover the same topics but each in your own angle.  This is a bit trickier but if down well, can be very rewarding as they sound so wonderful.

In conclusion, one of the main reason why there is a need to discuss and agree on this matter early in the preparation is to avoid any duplication during the bride and groom speech. The other reason is know what each of you will be presenting. It is not neccessary to see the final product as it will kill the ’surprise’…but what this method will do is to prevent any UNPLEASANT SURPRISES.

I was dead wrong…pun intended.

Failing to Plan is the key to Planning to Fail…it almost happen to me in the matter of planning for the groom speech.

When the wedding preparation got underway, I was already aware that I need to deliver a grooms speech during the wedding ceremony.  I have seen and heard how a groom wedding speech is done (I have been to at least 4 weddings so far). I did actually feel that it will not be a big deal.

The wedding speech played at the back of my mind for a little while and to be honest, I actually forgot about it until I was reminded by my best man!! At that time, it was merely 2 weeks before the wedding proper.

It was when I started to wrap my mind around the actual things that I want to share with the wedding audience that I realise that it was a bigger task than I had initially thought.

The first thing I did was to write down EVERYTHING that I could think of that I may want to say in my groom speech.  This included things related to how I first met Crystal and also the things that we plan to do together.  At the end of it, I had more than enough materials.  What next? Well, it is to put them all into the right context.  Question is how am I suppose to do that?  I will share that with you in my next writing.

In conlusion, please start planning early for your grooms speech.  I am assuming that most of you who are reading these words are going to get married soon….also in the same process that I have been before.

Jotting down all the notes is the 1st step towards getting memorable groom speeches done.  At this point, there is no need to worry about the structure or the sequence of the wedding speech.  That will come later.
